One Step Sparring Routines (Han Bon Kyorugi)

The techniques used are taught in Basic Technique Training before being applied to this exercise. One step sparring teaches focus, control, technique and application of technique and lays the foundation for self defense methodology enabling the students techniques to become instinctive and thus at this point extremely fast in their application. The performance of these techniques will be required to be demonstrated at a grading.

The more advanced a student becomes so the techniques become more advanced, with the student thus developing a greater and better understanding of the fundementals and principles of each technique with consideration to the principles of economy of motion, principles of continuous motion, and the dynamics of distance, for both the sudents techniques and that of their opponent.

Theory of Economy of Motion

1) All defensive techniques must actually be offensive techniques.

2) Move out of the path of any opponents technique rather than encountering it directly.

3) Never anticipate what your opponent has in mind.

4) Never attempt a technique that you have not fully mastered.

Theory of Continuous Motion

1) Always follow one technique with another

2) Always strike to the most debilitating and easily accessible target on the opponent.

2) Each defensive and offensive technique performed must allow for an easy and effective follow on with another technique.

Standard One Step Sparring Procedure

Practicing blocking and counter attacking techniques, the basic procedure is the same for all routines :

1) Bow to each other

2) Both assume ready stance

3) Attacker steps backwards, first with their right leg, into long stance with a low block with their left arm, with kihap

4) Defender responds with kihap.

5) The attacker steps forward with their right leg and performs a mid section right arm punch towards the defender. As the attacker starts the step forward with their punch, the defender performs their defense and counter attack routine.

6) The defender identifies the last technique with a kihap.

7) Both return to ready stance

6) This is then repeated with an attack with the opposite leg/arm.
